Description | Title: Paraprofessional / Emergency Substitute Teacher
Reports to: Principal
Purpose:
The purpose of the paraprofessional / emergency substitute teacher is to provide continuity of instruction, supervise students, and manage the learning environment as assigned when there is an absence on the campus. When all classrooms are covered and no vacancies exist due to absences or vacancies, the paraprofessional / emergency substitute teacher will work under the direction of the site leadership team to support the objectives of the campus.
Qualifications:
- Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
- Minimum of a valid Arizona Department of Education Emergency Substitute Teaching or Regular Substitute Teaching Certificate
- School-based instructional experience working with elementary-aged students (preferred)
- General knowledge of the operation of a school (preferred)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Previous experience in student discipline, behavior management, or counseling (preferred)
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Follow professional practices consistent with the school district policies when working with students, parents, and staff.
- Maintain a classroom that fosters a safe and positive environment for all students and staff in accordance with district policies.
- Supervise students in various educational settings, including classrooms, libraries, and outdoor spaces, to maintain a safe and orderly learning environment.
- Provide support to students to complete their assigned tasks and activities, offering assistance and guidance as needed.
- Monitor student behavior and enforce school rules and disciplinary policies to promote a positive and respectful learning environment.
- Facilitate small group instruction or individual tutoring sessions to reinforce learning objectives and address student needs.
- Assist with preparing instructional materials, including photocopying, laminating, and organizing classroom resources.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers and other staff members to address student concerns, provide feedback on student progress, and share observations.
- Manage classroom technology and audiovisual equipment to support instructional activities and presentations.
- Provide support during transitions between activities, including lining up, moving between classrooms, and entering and exiting the school building.
- Maintain accurate attendance records and report any discrepancies or concerns to the appropriate school personnel.
- Reports to the office upon arrival at school; checks mailboxes of absent teachers for materials requiring immediate attention; obtains duty schedules; requests clarification of school rules and procedures.
- Implement lesson plans while ensuring the integrity of academic time and motivating students to learn and participate.
- Reports all students' injuries, accidents, illness, and discipline problems to the appropriate authority immediately or as is reasonably possible.
- Conducts themselves and all their business in a professional manner.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues, conveying information about assignments, schedules, and behavioral expectations.
- Assist with lunchtime supervision and other non-instructional duties as assigned by school administration.
- Implement emergency procedures and protocols in the event of drills or actual emergencies, ensuring the safety and well-being of students.
- Adapt instruction and classroom management strategies to accommodate students with diverse learning needs and abilities.
- Foster a positive and supportive rapport with students, building relationships based on trust, respect, and empathy.
- Attend professional development workshops and training sessions to enhance skills and stay current on best practices in education and classroom management as required or assigned.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student records, assessments, and personal information in accordance with school policies and regulations.
- Serve as a positive role model for students, demonstrating professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
- Assist with setting up and cleaning classroom materials and equipment before and after instructional sessions.
- Perform other duties as assigned by school administration to support the overall operation of the school and students' academic success.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and to interact with the public and other staff.

The noise level in the work environment is moderate to moderately high during the work day. There may be periods of recurring stress in the performance of this job.
The schedule for the position will mostly be Monday through Friday during regular business hours. However, on occasion, based on specific events and/or district initiatives, the incumbent may be required to work during the evening time and weekends.
