TITLE: Special Education Resource Teacher

 

REPORTS TO: Principal

 

JOB DESCRIPTION: To create a flexible program favorable to learning and personal growth for the student in the least restrictive environment. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Arizona Special Education Teacher certification 
  • Knowledge of special education laws, procedures, practices, materials, equipment, and compliance standards required to provide appropriate learning experiences for special education students. Good knowledge of the nature and effects of the impairment(s) in all areas of disability 
  • Ability to assess needs, develop and implement the IEP, and evaluate outcomes in specialty 
  • Ability to coordinate activities with related and specialist staff 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, parents and the community; excellent human relations skills; skill in both oral and written communication; ability to work in multicultural environment with diverse population of students, staff, and parents 
  • May be required to control certain behavior(s) through physical restraint 
  • Computer proficiency in district designated computer hardware and software including MET and IEP software programs and other relevant software 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Provide direct instruction based on student’s IEP and the Arizona State Standards.  
  • Conduct appropriate academic evaluations; develop, implement and monitor appropriate academic/behavioral individual education plans (IEP’s).  
  • Confer and consult with regular classroom teachers regarding student needs and progress.  Maintain accurate records for documentation of student progress and for compliance with district, federal, and state guidelines.  
  • Participate in the MET process.  
  • Plan, conduct and/or participate in training activities and department meetings.  
  • May be required to participate in student’s meetings that may occur beyond the staff’s work assignment schedule.  
  • Follow state law and district policy with cases involving child abuse and neglect.  
  • Maintain on-going communication (verbal and written) with parents of special education students through conferences and other means to discuss pupil’s progress and interpret the school program.  
  • Provide on-going consultation and support to teachers and teams in the development, design, and implementation of Functional Behavioral Assessments and Positive Behavior Intervention Plans for students experiencing difficulties.  
  • Create an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards and interest centers.  
  • Consult with staff members regarding interventions and accommodations for students.  Demonstrate willingness to be flexible and creative to meet individual student needs.  
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service professional development activities provided by the District and/or self-selected professional growth activities.  
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
